Training and KNX certification: the path from beginner to specialist

By Mohamed Ali, Founder

A career in KNX rarely starts with a degree. Most engineers learn on the job, then formalise their knowledge through the KNX Association's training programs. Here is how the path is structured.

KNX Basic. Five days of training at a certified training center. Covers the protocol, the topology, ETS6 fundamentals, and a hands-on commissioning project. Pass the final exam and you become KNX Certified Partner. This is the entry-level credential and is widely recognized by clients in residential and commercial work.

KNX Advanced. Another five days, building on Basic. Goes deeper into ETS, advanced commissioning techniques, complex logic, KNX Secure, and integration. The exam is harder; pass it and you are KNX Certified Tutor or Advanced Certified depending on the path.

KNX Tutor. A trainer credential, achieved by passing both Basic and Advanced and then completing an additional pedagogy module. Tutors run accredited training centers and produce the next generation of certified partners.

Specialist tracks. The Association also offers domain-specific certifications: KNX Energy, KNX Lighting, KNX HVAC, and KNX Secure. Each is a focused course (typically 2 to 3 days) for engineers who already hold Basic and want to deepen one area.

Renewal and continuing education. Certifications do not expire, but the protocol evolves. Returning to a certified training center every few years for an Advanced refresher or a Specialist module keeps your skills sharp and your project portfolio aligned with current best practices.

Practical advice. Start with Basic, take a real project to commission immediately after, then return for Advanced six to twelve months later when you have field experience. Going for Advanced too early, before you have solved a few hundred real-world problems, makes the material harder to absorb. Field time is what turns a Basic-certified engineer into a confident commissioner.
